The Secretary General in the Department of Education and Skills
The Secretary General is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Department, including particular financial responsibilities, providing advice to Ministers, delivering outputs and outcomes, addressing cross-cutting matters and being accountable before Oireachtas Committees as required.
The reporting arrangements between the Secretary General and the Minister are broadly as set down under the Public Service Management Act, 1997. In addition, the Secretary General, as Accounting Officer, reports to the Committee of Public Accounts in relation to the Appropriation Account of the Department and related matters under the Comptroller and Auditor General (Amendment) Act 1993 and the Exchequer and Audit Departments Act 1866.
Key relationships for the Secretary General include the Minister and Ministers of State, managers and staff of the Department, statutory and other bodies within its ambit, EU and other international bodies, a range of diverse sectoral interests, as well as other Departments and public bodies.
